Field Station Grenspark Groot-Saeftinghe
Province of Zeeland has awarded a contract to build the Field Station to replace Het Zeeuwse Landschap’s Summer House, which was demolished last year. It is the base of operations for bird ringers and this is where experts conduct research and monitoring. This is important for mapping and conserving biodiversity in Saeftinghe and international knowledge about the value of the tidal area, salt marsh and migratory birds.
In addition, the Field Station fits into the Greater Saeftinghe Frontier Park. A cross-border project, where together with stakeholders, the regional stakeholders, added value for the region and nature is created.
About this project
Client: Province of Zeeland
Contractor: Van Hese Infra B.V.
Period: The contract was awarded on July 7, 2020. Completion was July 2023.
Work: full construction team member to help think about building quality, longevity, sustainability, circularity, biodiversity in design and ultimately construction.
Tender type: Multiple negotiated tender based on Best Value methodology with the preliminary design as the basis.
this project contributes to the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
9.4
An innovative smart system for generation and use of energy and water matched to the users. Through treatment of wastewater and an all-Electric plant supplemented by solar panels and energy storage.
11.4
Together
with regional stakeholders, added value for the region and nature is created through the established reception structure for nature experiences,
arts, nature and heritage education, lodging and gastronomy.
12.2
In the use of materials, as much as possible
used local, biobased or reclaimed materials. The interior walls are of local poplar.
13.3
For example, the south facade is a large greenhouse, which acts as a
climate façade for the accommodation areas behind. The sedum roof provides insulation and works well against heat stress because the retained water then evaporates.
15a
The “nature facades” contain local materials and provide habitat for insects, plants and other organisms. The roof has a very gentle slope, so that with local sedum, it can serve as a
safe nesting place for birds.
Design
The positioning of the Field Station is on the gas plateau at the end of the pipeline dam located between the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe and the Sieperdaschor. He comes half on land and half in the landform bank through which he looks across the land of Saeftinghe. The Saeftinghe Field Station will be located in one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands: The Drowned Land of Saeftinghe. This means that the station itself also becomes part of that nature and can play a role in it. The building should be a nature-inclusive building that also accommodates all kinds of life forms besides humans. Thus, the facades become so-called “natural facades. Facades that contain local material and provide space for insects, plants and other organisms. The roof has a very gentle slope, so that with local sedum, it can serve as a safe nesting place for birds. Other sustainable issues are also important. For example, the south facade is a large greenhouse, which acts as a climate facade for the living spaces behind it. The use of materials is also biobased (wood) as much as possible, and reclaimed wood or other materials can be used where possible. Not only the structural materials, other materials such as insulation and interior walls are used as much as possible from local, biobased or reclaimed materials. The installation will be an All-Electric system possibly supplemented by solar panels and energy storage. An installation tailored to the building and its users.

“Creating an iconic building for the area that sets the tone and defines the quality of future development in the area.”
Richard Rozemeijer, project manager at Province of Zeeland
“Because the tender was really done on quality, we can make this building. It is really special to be in such a collaboration where there is room for this way of working. And in addition to quality, it also provides additional sustainability!”
Martin van Overveld, architect at RO&AD architects
“The Field Station is an exclusive place where port, nature and (former) agriculture come together for future nature and climate ambassadors to tell stories and conduct research.”
Jan Joris Midavaine, senior project manager at Stichting Het Zeeuwse Landschap
“The building will stand partly on the shore and rest with the other half on thirteen-meter-long piles. All of the tropical heartwood are reused poles, a third coming from Flushing’s inner harbor. Nice to be able to give this wonderful material a second life.“
Ronald van Hese, director at Van Hese Infra B.V.
“By the construction team and the architect, the final design was made based on the preliminary design in the request for proposal.”
Kim Barentsen, procurement consultant at Province of Zeeland
