Measurable impact

Together with the MVI Platform, Province of Zeeland has developed a methodology to make the contribution to sustainability goals measurable for every tender. The spreadsheet below allows a provider of products, services or a work to visualize the avoided CO2 emissions, including the lower environmental impact of secondary materials for a product, service or work.

By adding up all purchases, the impact realized becomes visible to the SRI Plan. This also captures scope 3 for the entire organization.

primary raw material reduction

kg primary raw material avoided

The Dutch government has set the ambition of achieving a fully circular economy by 2050. How to deal with downcycling (decrease in quality/purity) of materials is currently being coordinated at the national level. Primary commodities are metals, minerals and oil and gas. Province of Zeeland signed the raw materials agreement and aims to purchase 50% fewer primary raw materials by 2030.

Reduce CO2 emissions

KG CO2 avoided

The climate is changing, with sea levels rising due to greenhouse gas emissions. This is why global, European and national agreements have been made to reduce CO2 emissions. Province of zeeland takes its responsibility to realize the Zeeland part of this global task with emission reduction. In addition, Provinces together with municipalities, water boards and the State have agreed that the Netherlands must be climate-proof and water-robust by 2050 at the latest.

The goal of the Clean Air Agreement is to permanently improve air quality in the Netherlands. It is an agreement between the state, provinces and a large number of municipalities. Together, the participating parties are aiming for a health gain of at least 50 percent by 2030 compared to 2016.

m3 freshwater storage

Effects of climate change are already being felt. Due to three dry years in a row, groundwater levels are falling, especially in the eastern and southern Netherlands. Spatial planning choices should take greater account of water availability. Also, all water users will have to use water more sparingly and water must be held much better and distributed more intelligently. In tenders encourage freshwater storage in our Province.

CRM substances phase out

kg CMR substances avoided

Substances with Carcinogenic (carcinogenic) and/or Mutagenic (inducing changes in hereditary traits) and/or Reproductive Toxic (harmful to reproduction or offspring) properties have become CMR stoffen called. SZW publishes an annual list of CMR substances. Province of Zeeland wants to phase out these substances by actively soliciting and testing alternatives for purchased products.

We increasingly face flooding, heat stress and drought due to a changing climate. Provicie Zeeland encourages it when measures are taken to ensure that the effect of the changing climate in Zeeland is limited. One such measure is green, or green-blue roofs, and there are subsidies available for these. The Province encourages wildlife management by providing grants to site management organizations, private landowners and agricultural wildlife managers for restoration.

MW installed renewable energy

The Province of Zeeland contributes to the generation of renewable energy in the Netherlands with the installation and operation of wind turbines, solar energy projects, energy from water and biomass. The Zeeland Energy Agreement shows how we are working together towards an energy-neutral 2050, sustainable living and life in Zeeland.
